What's Just Landed

  • September '17 Quarterly Wine Club

Are you all in for a treat this qtr!  Here's the case of goodies you'll be cracking open this time around.

2016 Venica & Venica 'Jersa' Pinot GrigioGold with copper highlights, this elegantly structured wine offers heady scents of white spring flower and orchard fruit. On the juicy, savory palate, nutmeg and mineral notes back up ripe apple, mature pear and apricot that lead to a fresh finish. $26

Jean-Paul Brun Crémant de Bourgogne NVBrun’s non-vintage (aka NV) sparkling, the Cremant de Bourgogne Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut “Charmes,” is made of 100% Chardonnay grapes, and is made with the same winemaking method used to produce the wines of Champagne. The wine is aged 18 months on its lees (dead yeast cells) before the wine is released, and this is only the third time that wine has ever been produced by Brun. It has a green apple and citrus character, with nuances of a chalky minerality making its presence known on the tangy, briny finish. This wine will liven up any occasion, and makes a great aperitif. Also, pair it with anything lighter, like salads and delicate seafood. $21

Chateau Moncontour Vouvray Brut NVChenin Blanc makes delicious when the producer tames its high acidity. This wine has a fine, fresh, gala apple flavor, crisp but not overpowering acidity, and a layer of almonds. It has fresh citrus and mineral aromas and a rich mousse with excellent acidity. This elegant sparkling wine is a great aperitif or accompaniment to caramel, cream and fruit desserts, but it can also be served with sushi and other seafood. $20

2011 Agricola Querciabella MongranaFresh and clean wine with dried cherries and citrus fruit. Medium body, firm tannins and a medium finish. Needs a little more in the center palate to be outstanding. Made from biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. $25

2011 Sasa Jazz Barbaresco - Jazz Barbaresco comes from vines that are 30 years old. The color is medium red with light aromas of cherry, mint and flowers. Bright, clean and juicy followed by sweeter floral notes that develop in the glass. $27

2016 Domaine du Gros More Bandol Rosé - This rosé comes from 25% Grenache and 25% Cinsault. These grape varieties are then combined with Mourvèdre. These three grape varieties bring a large personality due to the quality of the terroir. Thanks to all these factors we can confirm this wine of Bandol is fine, delicate and has a pronounced roundness.  $33

2015 Domaine Auguste Clape Vin des Amis Rouge - Readers on a budget looking for a taste of the style of this benchmark estate need to latch onto a few bottles of the Vin des Amis and Côtes du Rhône. A great vintage, the 2015 Le Vin des Amis should be snatched up by savvy readers. Bottled the first of September, it sports an inky color as well as classic Clape notes of violets, iron, and black and blue fruits. It comes from clay soils and is a bigger, richer and chunkier wine than the Côtes du Rhône. It is ideal for drinking over the coming 3-4 years. $28

2006 Malvira S. Guglielmo Langhe Rosso - Not even sure I can describe how this wine taste!  Pretty dense ruby in color but with tons of blackberry, rich prunes and tobacco.  This is a HUGE wine that needs time in the bottle.  Notes of more blackberry, leather and vanilla with a super velvety finish.  Why can't all wines be like this? $22

2009 Boeri 'Porlapa' Barbera d'Asti Superiore - Pörlapà presents an almost impenetrable intense ruby red color. It has persistent notes of ripe fruit with a rich body and well-balanced structure. The wine maintains a surprising freshness even after years of aging.  Aged 18 months in barrels. $35

2014 Le Clos du Caillou Vieilles Vignes Cotes du Rhone Rouge - The 2014 Cotes du Rhone Le Caillou offers plenty of sweet cherry, strawberry, anise and herbes des Provence characteristics in its elegant, lightly textured and juicy style that gains more weight with aeration. This is a Grenache dominant blend including Syrah, Carignan and Mourvedre. This is essentially a de-classified Chateauneuf-du-Pape. $22

2015 Crous St. Martin Chateauneuf-du-Pape - A beautiful clean ruby color. The nose will reveal aromas of cherry, mulberry and fine spices. Sensual mouthfeel expressing depth and smoothness with aromas of kirsch, blackcurrant, followed by fine spices such as thyme, liquorice and white pepper. Tannins are present but are polished and silky. Complex wine with roundness, power and a long mouthfeel. $25

2014 Domaine des Fines Caillottes Pouilly-Fume - Blended from grapes from a range of different soils, this open, generous wine has richness and a structure that comes from the ripe apple and gooseberry fruits. The wine is textured and deserves to age. $27

  • 8/19 Shop closed for a few days

Well boys and girls...the shop will be closed from this Saturday the 19th till Wednesday the 23rd. Nicole, Jeanne-Claire and I will be heading back to the ranch to spend some time with the family, finish up the wheat harvest and watch the eclipse.

As usual my vacation will be me working long hours on things I don't understand and have only used once or twice. Needless to say we'll have some fun, do a bit of riding around the ranch and I'll get some fly fishing in on the Deschutes river. Hell...we might even shoot a few birds if it's not too hot out.

Just wanted to keep everyone in the loop about the shop. Don't look directly at the sun!!! Wear your eclipse galsses and don't join any cults. There is no space ship picking you up at the end!!!

  • Domaine Michel Gros 2014 Release

There are a handful of you that have been showing interest in Burgundy for the last year so I've been hustling my ass to get you some serious juice that you can lay down for a few years but also enjoy today.
Dating back to the early 1800s and more recently run by Jean Gros until his retirement in the early 1990s, the Gros Dynasty is now operated by the family’s sixth generation and divided into four estates known as Domaine Michel Gros, Domaine Gros Frére et Soeur, Domaine A.F. Gros and Domaine Anne Gros.

In 1975, Michel Gros worked his first vintage on the family estate alongside his father. Today, he is the owner and grower of Clos des Réas (Monopole) and Clos de Vougeot, which he inherited from his father, and additionally purchased properties in Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-St-Georges Les Chaliots, Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis. In 1997, the Écard family entrusted Michel to run their estate located in Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-St-Georges. In total, Domaine Michel Gros represents approximately 18 ha. Known for combining tradition with innovation, Michel does not hold back when experimenting with techniques that could potentially lead to improvement in both the vineyard and the cellar.

Michel’s hard work and talent has been rewarded with numerous accolades, including the title of "Best Red Wine Maker" and "Best Pinot Noir" at the International Wine Challenge in London, two years in a row!
    Check these out!!

Michel Gros 2014 Nuits St Georges - Sarah Marsh, Winter 2015, The Burgundy Briefing N°17.  The cuvée of parcels on the Vosne side. A blend of parcels between Vosne and Nuits Saint Georges. It is supple and smooth. A very Vosne style NSG. Soft and juicy dark fruit. Splashing and easy, but also very fresh. It is appetising and bright. A little rounded in the mid palate. The tannins are present and correct, supportive and twangy and fresh. Score 16.  $60 per 750ml

Michel Gros 2014 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru - Gérard Basset & Stephen Brook, February 2016, DECANTER 93 points.  Black cherry nose with sweet spices, a velvety texture and a plummy finish. Drink 2018-2028.  $110 per 750ml

Michel Gros 2014  Chambolle-Musigny - Sarah Marsh, Winter 2015, The Burgundy Briefing N°17.  This is somewhat sumptuous on the attack..very juicy and and aromatic at first and then it tightens and the core is racy...tight and zesty and mineral and the tannins show a little more... there is a finesse and energy at the end. (this has just finished the MLF). Score 16.25.  $80 per 750ml

Michel Gros 2014 Vosne Romanee 1er Cru “Aux Brulees” - Gérard Basset & Stephen Brook, February 2016, DECANTER 95 points.  Lovely sweet blackberry fruit, cured meat notes, a velvety texture and savoury finish. A wine of great charm that illustrates well how this estate punches above its weight. Drink 2018-2028.  $120 per 750ml

Michel Gros 2014 Fontaine St Martin Blanc Monopole - Gérard Basset & Stephen Brook, February 2016, DECANTER 90 points.  Superb wine, showing a lovely mix of dried and orchard fruit, touches of spices, a lively texture and mineral finish. Drink 2016-2020.  $36 per 750ml

Michel Gros 2014 Hauts Cotes de Nuits - Sarah Marsh, Winter 2015, The Burgundy Briefing N° 17.  Fresh and red and a touch of black fruit. High toned. Soft and fruity; plenty of red fruits, juicy and supple and energetic. Very nice forward fruity wine with sappy acidity at the end.  $30 per 750ml

Michel Gros 2014 Nuits St Georges “Les Chaliots” - Sarah Marsh, Winter 2015, The Burgundy Briefing N°17.  The top soil is 1m deep - agile and the flint stones. This is deeper and richer and ‘stronger’ than the Vosne side NSG. It is quite compact and has a smoky dark note...colder in feel and a savoury cool sappiness on the finish..somewhat austere and certainly straight. “This cuvee ages very well” It is edgy. Score 16.25  $60 per 750ml

Michel Gros 2013 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru - Sarah Marsh, Winter 2014, The Burgundy Briefing N° 16.  The vines are now 26 years old, 100% new oak and three barrels. This is a large bold wine; but is draped in silky tannins; (although the new oak is very evident at the moment). Some muscle, but it is smooth. The fruit is very fresh, juicy even - there is the exuberance of young vines here - and the freshness is clear; especially on the long and vigorous finish. Score 19.2   $178 per 750ml

Michel Gros 2014 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru - Gérard Basset & Stephen Brook, February 2016, DECANTER 94 points.  Lovely nose of raspberry, black fruit and gamey nuances with a velvety texture and savoury finish. Drink 2018-2028.  $170 per 750m

Michel Gros 2014 Vosne Romanee “Clos de Reas” Monopole 1er Cru - Gérard Basset & Stephen Brook, February 2016, DECANTER 93 points. Ripe cherry and blackberry with notes of cured meat spices on a silky texture and savoury finish. A wine that will give enormous pleasure. Drink 2016-2028.  $130 per 750ml

As you can see...we are not screwing around here.  These wines are only offered to wine merchants who are very passionate about Burgundy wines.  I work pretty closely with the importers in order to get the best wines we can in the area.  The wines are in the warehouse and I can get them pretty much the next day.  Let me know.

  • June 2017 Wine Club Wines

Okay so this is really really late!!!

Red Wine Club $75 per month

2013 Viberti Langhe Nebbiolo - Marked by ripe red fruit flavors, particularly cherries, and soft tannins, Viberti Nebbiolo is a fresh expression of Piedmont’s signature varietal.  Vinified in stainless steel, the wine was aged for 9 months before being transferred into neutral oak barrels known as tini where it rested 2-3 months prior to bottling.  An additional 3 months of bottle aging followed. ($25)

2012 Liberti Buon Padre Barolo - Viberti’s flagship Barolo is a blend of fruit from Viberti’s top vineyard sites.  Buon Padre is a complex, full bodied wine that opens with notes of preserved fruit and spices, and is backed by nuances of earth, leather, and wild flowers.  It is aged in tini for 36-40 months and is bottled unfiltered before further refining in bottle for 6 months.  Approachable upon release, Viberti Buon Padre will only improve with time. ($50)

Daily Drinking Red  Wine Club $39 per month

    2014 San Felice Perolla Toscana

    2014 San Felice Contrada Toscana

2015 Domaine de la Brunely Ventoux Rouge (unicorn wine)

Daily Drinking White Wine Club $39 per month

I'm not going to lie...I'm doing this so late in the month that everyone has picked up their wines and I can't remember what the hell I put in the club for the month.  Blame all the college bong rips and late nights studying for my GREs....right!

  • May 2017 Wine Club Wines

Sorry it's taken me to almost the end of the month to get these posted.  The shop has been pretty busy and I've been spending too much time working on our new project...Rain City Wines egg production.  Now...onto the wines.

Daily Drinking Red Wine Club $39 per month

2015 Chateau La Croix du Duc Bordeaux - The first thing you should know is that when you buy this little Bordeaux by the case...it comes in its own wood box. Now for the wine itself. 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc & 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Has some solid fruit with amazing toasty notes and soft tannins. This might be the winner winner chicken dinner wine!

2015 Les Jamelles Malbec Pays d'Oc - With its ruby color with red highlights, this wine is elegant, spicy and liquorice nose with notes of red and black fruits. The palate is soft and well structured with very present fruit aromas and fine tannins that provide an elegant length.  With the amount of fruit and structure in this Malbec, I'd suggest tossing some Bratts in the Green Egg and letting them sit there while the wine opens up a bit.

2013 Indigenous Selections Barbera - This is one bad-ass Barbera for the price!  Pure Barbera, pure awesomeness.  Solid fruit, medium to full-bodied with fine yet sweet tannin's on the end.   I would actually put some meat in the crockpot and let it simmer for 12 hrs.  Add a little of this wine to simmer with the meat.  Don't forget the taters and carrots.

Daily Drinking White Wine Club $39 per month

2015 Mas Las Cabes Cotes Catalanes Blanc - This is dominated by the orange blossom, mint, and apricot of Muscat, into which is blended a little Grenache Blanc and Macabeu that supply depth and richness. Infectiously juicy and bright, yet with an impressive sense of substantiality and with intriguing saline, savory, and smoky accents, this clever presentation of Muscat with a deft supporting cast is sure to be a food-friendly and porch sipper.

2016 Domaine Santa Giulietta Corse Rosé - Bright and full of life, this fantastic Corsican rose is filled with a harmonious blend of fruit, spice and mineral, this low alcohol (12 percent) beauty is eminently food friendly with fresh nectarine and cherry notes gliding through a lightly floral finish.  You need this with some street tacos!

2016 Domaine Le Clos Des Lumieres Cotes du Rhone Rosé -  Color of rose petals with hints of fuchsia. Very fine nose dominated by strawberry aromas. The palate will again reveal the strawberries, in addition to cherry. The mid-palate shows some spiciness, followed by a pink grapefruit and flint finish. Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre.

Red Wine Club $75 per month

2002 Chateau Lanessan Haut-Medoc - The wines of Chateau Lanessan are characterized by their deep and intense ruby color. The nose is elegant with dominant fruit and floral aromas. The mouth is structured, complex and dense. Together it is harmonious with a beautifully long finish.  I mean really?  This wine deserves a very nice cut of meat with a reverse sear. ($26)

2012 Chateau Bellevue Medoc - Showing firm tannins and structure this is currently a tough wine. It has a solid character although plenty of hints of juicy red berry fruits are ready to come out as the wine ages. This wine can Pair up nicely with grilled pork chops with a slight reduction sauce. ($19)

2013 Masciarelli Marina Cvetic Montepulciano d'Abruzzo - This is a dense red wine that's certainly not your typical Montepulciano. Think of it as a "Super Abruzzo" with supple fruit, rich tannins, and spiced aromas. Aged 36 months in new French oak barrique.  With the amount of spice this wine produces..again..grilled meat but I'd do beef short ribs smoke for around 18 hrs.  Take the time to really think of a nice rub, decant the wine several hrs before you need it. ($30)
