• Special Evening Tasting w/ Lucio Gomiero of Vignalta

    Tasting

    Founded in 1980 by Lucio Gomiero, Vignalta is now one of the most interesting estates of the Euganean Hills (Colli Euganei). Since 1994 Vignalta has vinified the grapes grown in its own vineyards.in the modern cellar at Arqua` Petrarca .The cellar is completely carved into the rock, and is suggestive, but mostly functional for aging wine in oak barrels at constant temperature and humidity.

    With grapes grown on about 50 hectares of vineyards, Vignalta produces 250,000 bottles annually. From the vineyard of Mount Gemola we produce our flagship wine (Merlot – Cabernet Franc) that has so far received great recognition.

    Besides founder Lucio Gomiero, the current owners at Vignalta are the Salvagnin and Guzzo families, Padua farmers who for some years have been actively involved in the world of wine and in the very special production reality of the Euganean Hills. (from the winery)

    Lucio will be stopping by form 5-7pm to taste us on these amazing wines.  Now most of you have already tasted some of the wines but this is a special chance to have a winemaker in the shop and listen to him educate us on his winery and grape growing region.  We have a few of the wine in the shop but he will be breaking out a few special wines that I haven't tried yet.

    Here's what he's rolling with...

    NV Vignalta Brut NatureThe Vignalta Brut Nature is a Method Champenoise sparkling wine with no residual sugar. It is made with 2/3 Friularo grape (a local red grape with very high acidity, making it suitable for sparkling wine) and 1/3 Chardonnay.  Bone dry!

    2011 Vignalta Colli Euganei Pinot BiancoThis ancient Burgundian grape variety has been successfully grown in the Veneto region for about three centuries. Vignalta's Pinot Bianco grapes come from the Venda & Castelnuovo vineyards, which sit at high elevations with NE & West exposures on a mix of clay & volcanic soils. The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks with full spontaneous malolactic fermentation. It is then kept on its lees for several months, which helps to develop rich textures and flavors. This is a wine that ages very well in bottle, gaining an intriguing mineral complexity through the years.

    2009 Vignalta Colli Euganei Rosso Riserva60% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon.  Destemmed fruit undergoes 14 days of maceration and fermentation in steel tanks with daily pump overs. The wine is aged in oak 500 liter oak barrels (Allier and Slavonian) for 24 months, and 6 months in bottle.  Talk about a wine that means business!

    2009 Vignalta Colli Euganei Gemola - Perfect exposure and the unique composition of volcanic soil allows Vignalta to produce exceptional grapes from their vineyard on the Gemola hill, planted with Merlot together with a small percentage of Cabernet Franc. 

    Gemola is the flagship wine of Vignalta and always receives numerous accolades for its elegance and complexity. From the vineyard through the winemaking and aging process (2 years in new oak barrels), this wine is treated with the utmost attention to detail. It is surely one of the finest Italian Merlots in the international marketplace, both in terms of quality and value. 

    Plum, blackberry, cocoa, and earthy aromas and flavors leap from the glass. It has a fabulous texture, like a piece of velvet rolled out across your palate. The finish is long and lush. This is a wine that absolutely kicks other Bordeaux-style blends that cost twice as much to the curb!

    2013 Vignalta Moscato Fior d'Arancio - Speaks for itself. With only 5.5% alcohol this wine is refreshing and irresistible, but not over the top..... Sparkling Fior d’Arancio is a fragrant wine, reminiscent of apricot, citrus, and tropical fruit. Moderately sweet, light in alcohol and with good acidity it can be refreshing in sunny afternoon. Traditionally it accompanies light desserts.

    2011 Vignalta Fior D’arancio Passito DOCG Alpianae (Dessert) - Never tasted this before so it should be a real treat!!!

    Plus some herbed salt! 

    So everyone come down to the shop next Wednesday (24th) starting at 5pm for free to meet Lucio and get ready to have your mind blown!  Six wines with almost a 50/50 split of whites and reds.  Champagne style bubbles with some killer Moscato d'Asti and a sweet dessert wine.

    There are no reasons for you not to be here.  It's too dark to mow the lawn and the gutters are already full of water and needles so you might as well just let em flow.
