The 2016 Montefalco Sagrantino opens slowly with a mix of black cherries, licorice, cloves, and dark blue and purple tinged florals. It's soft upon entry washing silky waves of wild ripe berries and spices across the palate, as grippy tannins slowly saturate toward the close. Notes of tobacco and spicy cinnamon linger long through the structured and almost chewy finale. The 2016 really impresses with its balance and concentration, but it will need a few more years to come fully into focus.
