The white wines of Bandol account for just 5% of this region's wines, most of which are understandably consumed locally, with the area's seafood. Pibarnon make an ever more exciting example from a few hectares of a north-facing, chalky parcel of vines. This is a more sheltered site that allows for a slower, gentler maturation of grapes that in turn helps to preserve acidity. Meanwhile the high limestone content contributes a tight structure and stony zing. The 2014 is sculpted from 45% Clairette, which provides the ripe, smooth fruit, 30% Bourboulenc, which brings structure and acidity, with the remainder being made up of local grape varieties (including a little Ugni Blanc and Vermentino). These latter varieties no doubt combine to add aromatic and complexity. Raised in large, old oak casks, this is a deliciously idiosyncratic white with the texture of the south and the juicy freshness of a high grown wine.
