Massive, dense, and concentrated, the ’09 Valpolicella from Dal Forno remains delineated, complex and delicately layered. Brambly berries, dried black fruit, a deep dip in the spice box, umami, scorched earth and mocha unfold in kaleidoscopic precision in this velvety, luscious wine. Ripe, chewy tannins, perfect acidity, and breathtaking balance make this ’09 Valpolicella a special vintage. Crafted from Corvina (70%), Rondinella (20%), Croatina (5%), and Oselata (5%), Dal Forno Valpolicella Superiore holds essentially the same grape composition as the estate’s Amarone; the wine is a cru from the Monte Lodoletta vineyard, just like the Amarone; and just like the Amarone, the grapes undergo the appassimento technique, drying for about a month before pressing. The result is a wine that drinks like the estate’s Amarone--but at a fraction of the price.
