La Gerla is a relatively young estate, purchased in 1976 by Sergio Rossi, who left a successful advertising career to follow his passion for the vineyards. The previous owners of the estate were the Biondi Santi family, who were producing one of the top Brunellos in the area. He created and marketed the La Gerla brand two years later in 1978 to much success. He tragically passed away in 2011, but the estate is still owned and run by his wife, Donatella, and dedicated team members that have been with La Gerla for decades. All of their grapes are harvested by hand from organically grown terroirs in Montalcino.
This 100% sangiovese is made from young vines in Castelnuovo (in the Brunello zone but not designated as such) and undergoes the same selection and vinification as the estate’s renowned Brunellos, with the difference being the aging: “Poggio gli Angeli” is aged for just four months in large Slavonian oak barrels, then two months in bottle. A core of fleshy red cherry yields layers of ripe tomato, baking spice, cigar box, and earth with satisfying texture and bright acidity. A must-try for Chianti lovers, or for anyone looking for a classically-styled food friendly value! Organically grown.
